The medals, letters and skeches of Captain John Slade, one of the survivors of the battle of Maiwand in the 2nd Afghan War, went on sale on December 15th, 2009 at Sherborne, Dorset. Known as 'johnny of Maiwand', he considered the battle "too awful to describe". The battle took place on July 27th, 1880 at Maiwand villiage. The sketches sold depict the battle. Thomas Levi Luddington, survivor at Rourke's Drift during the Zulu War, was originally buried in an unmarked grave when he died in 1934. A rededication service was performed and new headstone was installed at Weston Mill, Plymouth on Mar 24, 2009.
