British WW1 sailors who died during the war, at least 44,000 of them, have had their records put on Ancestry.co.uk according to a story in the Guardian.  Men who died on the Western Front got lots more press, but the British Navy took a beating during WW1 also.  When a ship went down it took most of the members of the crew with it, so for at least half of the dead there were no bodies to recover.  As a measure of the sailor's plight, at least 6000 British sailors were lost at the Battle of Jutland alone.  Ancestry.co.uk isn't free, except  for the first 14 days, after that it's a bit better than 10 pounds a month.
