This film of Dutch Voortrekkers versus the Zulus predates the British trouble with the Zulu Kingdom. The Battle of Blood River took place on the banks of the Ncome River in KwaZulu-Natal. The Dutch, led by Andries Pretorius, defeated the 10,000 strong Zulus, led by Cheif Dingane, by a combination of grit, fire discipline, and a strong defensive position. The odds in the beginning were strongly against the 400 or 500 Dutch, but by the end of the day, they were all standing, and the Zulus were 3000 men short. Spears on one side, and wagon Kraal and muskets on the other, in the end, the Dutch technology and tactics were superior. The white man won this one, others they would lose. This is a clip of the original film, Die Bou Van 'N Nasie, a history of South Africa made on the anniversary of the original battle in 1939.
